How many days does it take for a cargo ship to go from India (Port Chennai) to the USA (Port Miami or any port on the East Coast)?

Time taken to travel is a function of speed and distance.

Speed varies from ship to ship. Slowest of small cargo ships can travel at as low as 8-9 knots while the fast moving container ships can travel at as high as 20-22 knots. Speed also depends on weather conditions. Certain months have higher probability of the vessel experiencing bad weather than other.

Distance in this case varies depending upon whether one chooses to use the Suez Canal or not. Transiting Suez Canal involves extra cost depending on size of the ship involved. A voyage planner compares this extra cost with the cost of bunkers and other charges spent on covering extra distance which one has to cover while avoiding the canal.

Considering all these factors and assuming a speed of 13 knots, below are the options:-

1. Chennai to Miami - Via Suez - Total distance 9850 nautical miles - Time required 31 days approx.

2. Chennai to Miami - Via Cape of Good Hope - Total distance 11550 nautical miles - Time required 37 days approx.

Besides the above mentioned meteorological, commercial and technical factors one also need to consider security issues as both of the above mentioned routes pass through the IMO declared HRA (High Risk Area) in Arabian Sea. Transiting through high risk areas also involve higher insurance premiums and underwriters will need to be informed in advance, depending on the policy terms. The operators may choose to avoid HRA. This will increase the distance further.
